Some Aspects of Stability of Crop Varieties
نویسنده
چکیده
1. Introduction The performance of a particular variety is the result of its genetic constitution and the environment in which it has been grown. In practice it is quite possible that a particular variety may not exhibit the same phenotypic performance under different environments or different varieties may respond differently to a specific environment. This variation, arising from the lack of correspondence between the genetic and non-genetic effects is known as the genotype-environment (GE) interaction. The presence of GE interaction reduces the correlation between phenotype and genotype, makes difficult to judge the genetic potential of variety and alters the relative ranking of different varieties. Because of these very reasons, before the successful release of particular variety on commercial basis plant breeders grow different varieties at different locations over the years just to determine the magnitude of GE interactions for ensuring the stability of varieties, under varying environments.

Study of Variation of Yield and Morphological Traits of Some Local Varieties of Iran’s Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)
Eggplant is a crop that has been cultivated for a long time in different areas of Iran. Nevertheless, no sufficient studies have been done on variation of morphological traits and yield of this crop in Iran, and it has not been well-attended in breeding programs. Therefore, to study genetic diversity in collected local varieties, the experiment was conducted in a Randomized Complete Block Desig...

Salinity is a major abiotic-stress worldwide which decreases crop growth productivity. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether salt stress has adverse effects on growth, photosynthetic efficiency, biochemical properties and nutrient status of maize. An experiment was carried out with seeds of four varieties of maize which were allowed to germinate for one week. Afterwards,...
متن کاملParticipatory breeding, an approach for sustainable production of new rice cultivars in Iran
Over the past 50 years, thousands of rice varieties have been introduced by plant breeders to agricultural communities all over the world. Despite the improvement of attributes such as grain yield and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses, a significant portion of farmers still prefer local varieties over the improved cultivars. The main reasons for this perference are the absence of a dire...

Drought is one of the major factors limiting crop production in Iran. Twenty Iranian wheat cultivars with wide range of sensitivity to drought, including 18 varieties of bread wheat and two varieties of durum wheat were used in two separate field experiments in 2009-2010 at the Experimental Station of College of Agricultural in Shiraz University. Each experiment was conducted as a randomized co...
متن کاملDetermination of Crop Water Use and Crop Coefficient of Two Hybrids of Sunflower (Euroflor and Sirna) under Drip-Tape Irrigation System
The purpose of this study was to measure daily and seasonal evapotranspiration and daily crop coefficient of two common varieties of sunflower (Sirna and Euroflor) via drip-tape irrigation system. For this purpose, the sunflower water use was determined by daily monitoring of soil moisture at the depths of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 60 cm, and the crop evapotranspiration (ETC) was measured using volume...
